Gherkin Draco ~10hr Review: The Hybrid BANGER You Need To Try

If you’ve been scrolling through pickleball paddle reviews lately, you might have heard the buzz about Gherkin’s latest paddle, the Draco. I’ve put around 10 hours of drills and competitive games on the Gherkin Draco, which is about the minimum amount of time I put on something before I can confidently say I understand the paddle. Does the Gherkin Draco live up to the hype?

Spoiler: it’s a banger.

Whether you are a developing player looking to add some serious firepower to your game, or an advanced player hunting for a high-tech foam core paddle that does not break the bank, the Draco deserves your attention.

You can check out my one-game review video on Instagram below, but keep reading for the deep dive into why this paddle absolutely slaps.

The Feel: Nanocellular Foam Meets Hybrid Design

If you loved the plush, floating-core feel of the Luzz Inferno but found yourself wishing for something a bit more maneuverable and aggressive at the net, the Gherkin Draco might just be your new best friend.

At its core (badum-tsss), the Draco utilizes Gherkin’s privately sourced Nanocellular Polymer (NCP) Foam. Unlike the generic foam flooding the market right now, this solid-state foam sits inside a floating piston construction. It’s Gherkin’s take on the very popular floating foam core design (think Loco, Boomstik, Quanta, etcetera). What does that mean for you on the court? It means the paddle manages to stay reasonably "dwelly"—holding the ball on the face just long enough for you to direct your shots—while still delivering explosive energy return.

The Draco is one of the only hybrid shaped floating foam core paddles on the market, carving out its own unique spot in the paddle world.

Power, Pop, and Becoming a Threat on Counters

Let's talk about the offensive capabilities. The firepower on the Draco is undeniably high. If you are stepping onto the court with this paddle, you are instantly a big threat on counters. The pop is incredibly aggressive—I’d place it just below my current main paddle: the RPM Q2 Widebody. If you’ve never hit that paddle, it is comparable in feel and pop to the Selkirk Boomstik.

Power on full swings (serves, drives and putaways) is a slight step up from the Q2.

When you are engaged in fast-paced firefights at the kitchen line, the Draco slices through the air with an average swing weight of 111. For reference, the average swing weight of a hybrid is around 115. Translation? Fast and lethal.

A quick word of warning: if you are transitioning from a lower pop all-court or control paddle, dialing in your soft game and resets with the Draco is going to take some adjusting. The ball jumps off the face, so you will need to soften your hands to keep your shots unattackable.

Sweet Spot and Customization

No one is going to complain about the sweet spot on the Draco out of the box. The hybrid shape blends a longer reach with a generous, forgiving face. Even on off-center strikes, the paddle remains incredibly stable, boasting an average twist weight of 6.7 right out of the box. (For you non-paddle nerds, that’s above average and creeping into widebody territory.)

For players who love a two-handed backhand, the Draco features a comfortable 5.5-inch handle with a throat taper that makes it incredibly easy to get two hands on the grip.

Furthermore, because the paddle comes in at a highly maneuverable 7.9 ounces, there is plenty of room to customize. You can easily add some additional perimeter lead tape to boost the twist weight and plow-through without making the paddle feel sluggish.

The Final Verdict

While the Draco might not become my new main paddle, it is an incredibly easy recommendation for players looking for a hybrid foam paddle with high firepower and room for customization. In my one-game review, I gave this paddle a solid 8.5 out of 10, and after 10 hours I maintain that ranking.

At $180 before discounts, the Gherkin Draco competes with premium paddles that cost significantly more. It delivers top-tier power, innovative foam technology, and a fast hybrid shape at a price point that just makes sense.
